I was shocked, we going home from London Padington to Oxford, it was December 1960, the old fashioned train with no corridors had individual compartments and we were alone in a compartment intended for 12, so hardly crowded. Indian xxx “So what in Gods name happened?” I asked, “I thought it was someone’s birthday party?”
“Yes and I was the present!” she snapped, “Why did you abandon me!”
“Look I only came at all because you promised I could watch trains instead of going to some ghastly party,” I reminded her, “I though I was doing you a favour?”
“Well Mummy and Daddy wouldn’t have let me go but they trust you.” she replied, ”And you let me down!”
“Look you knew very well I would stay until you met your friends and then watch trains,” I said.
